The Worst Day of Graham's Life

Well, Graham continued to throw up throughout the night on Friday so we took him back to the doctor's on Saturday expecting him to be admitted to the hospital in Smithville and given IV fluids.

At the doctor's office they checked him out and took some blood (his first traumatic experience of the day). The doctor was concerned with an elevated liver number and said the hospital here was not equipped to deal with that and recommended that we take him to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital in Nashville. Anthony and I were both stunned at this recommendation, never expecting that that would be the case.

We came home to make some phone calls and get directions to Vanderbilt and then headed there. The doctor we saw in Smithville called ahead so they took us back right away and checked him out. The ER doctor there didn't seem too concerned about the liver number as it's commonly seen with the stomach flu. They decided to give him the IV fluids we knew he needed as well as an anti-nausea medicine.

This course of treatment seemed simple enough, but Graham had to endure a lot before he could get it. It took 4 nurses and an IV therapist 6 tries before they could get a line in him. They didn't do simple little pokes. It seemed like once they got the needle in they would move it around trying to get the vein to open up I guess. He has never cried so much and we have never felt so helpless. After much praying and calls to our parents for prayer, they finally got him the fluids and medication he needed. He perked up pretty quickly and hasn't thrown up since. They discharged him around 8:00 last night and sent us home.

Needless to say we are all still a little shaken up by the whole experience. He is pretty sleepy today and I am watching him, just waiting for him to throw up again since it has been happening for almost a week now. We were told to bring him back if he throws up regularly for 6-8 hours or doesn't haven a wet diaper in that time frame.

Pray that he won't throw up anymore, that he will have wet diapers, that we won't have to go back to the hospital, and ultimately for him to be healed. Also pray that I don't get this since I've been exposed to it for so long.

Ugh, Jackie, my heart was breaking as I read that story! Holding your baby down as they get poked over and over is no fun at all! I'm so sorry you had to go through that! And, of course, so sorry that little Graham had to go through that as well! I'm praying that the IV and meds will work and that God will heal his little body. Hang in there and focus all of that God-given compassion on your little one.

Oh my........I am so sorry, what a horrible time! I'll keep praying that Graham does get better and doesn't get sick again! Make sure you take care of yourself so you can take care of you two boys. :)
PS was Graham sick at all around his vaccinations? Just a thought from stuff that I have read.
Prayers to you and smiles as well.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and Anthony and Graham. This is one of the hardest parts of parenting, I have learned. It's so tough to see your child suffer. But it sounds like you all are making it through. I will pray that you don't get sick as well.
Miss you..

He got his shots last month. Anthony had the same thing, so we're pretty confident that it is a virus that is just taking its sweet old time to get out of his body!
